How to Measure for a Roll-Up Door

A reliable roll-up door order begins with the finished opening and the clear space around it. Do not copy a label from an old door or measure only one point; verify the building as it exists where the new guides and barrel will mount.

Record finished width and height

Measure the clear opening width at the top, middle, and bottom. Measure height at the left, center, and right. Record every number and flag any variation instead of rounding it away.

Identify the mounting surface

Note whether each jamb is wood, structural steel, or masonry and photograph the full inside face. The mounting surface must be continuous, sound, and accessible for the guide hardware.

Measure sideroom and headroom

Sideroom is the clear area beside each jamb. Headroom is the clear vertical space above the finished opening. Measure to the nearest obstruction, not merely to the roof line.

Check backroom and obstructions

Look inward from the opening for lights, beams, conduit, sprinkler piping, bracing, shelving, and doors. Photograph the ceiling and both upper corners.

Include all measurements, straight-on and angled photos, the building material, intended use, and desired operating method. Final dimensions and product requirements are confirmed before ordering.
